Social Dilemma Question

To what extent do you agree with the film’s central premise that these technologies represent an “existential threat” to our lives? Are they overreacting or is the threat really this serious? Is there a solution to how these technologies run, or is it too late to make a change?

I somewhat agree with the film’s central idea that these technologies are a threat. I believe it is a threat due to the scale and speed that technology is shaping human experiences. They are being used without regulation and is extremely damaging to the human mind. On the other hand, these technologies aren’t good or evil, we are able to control them. Its not that the threat isn’t real but its not inevitable if we find a way to protect ourselves. I also do believe that this is not an overreaction and we should take this topic very seriously. I think that the solution to this problem is, to put it simply, make people aware of the problem. First, we should teach the public of the harmfulness of technology and the right way to use it. Second, we should have people step in and find a way to regulate the platforms and companies creating the technology. Lastly, we should make companies move beyond the idea of maximizing their profit and instead recognize their responsibility and importance to society.

Sherry Turkle Journal

Turkle writes that we are undergoing what she calls “a flight from conversation”. What does she mean by this? Do you agree with the arguments Turkle makes about how digital conversations are affecting our lives? To what extent do you see a lack of empathy in todays society?

Sherry Turkle’s idea talks about the growing trend in society where people are using digital communication more than face-to-face conversations. Turkle argues that these digital interactions are convenient but lack the depth and emotional connection that come with real, in-person conversations. She also says that this shift has a lot of consequences like reducing our ability to empathize with others, understand their emotions, and just talk to people in general. I do not agree with Turkle’s arguments. I believe, specifically in long-distance relationships, that the empathy for others is much stronger. Yes, I agree that digital conversations are changing our lives, but I believe it’s in a good way. The only place I see a lack of empathy in digital communication is in comment sections on social media. Some people feel real while others lack that human emotion.
